Before we can conserve nature, we have to know what's out there. To be effective, we need that inner certainty of what we're fighting for: and that means, first of all, going out and learning the living landscape. To help you get started, here's an idea of the richness of life right here in Brazos County:
Amphibians and Reptiles (from the TCWC checklist)
For a better idea of the stakes involved and what you can do, learn about Miss Waldron's Colobus, and then contact your elected representatives and tell them why this can't happen again. To help you write the most effective letter possible, we've provided some tips courtesy of Julie Cotton, who's had firsthand experience working in a Congressional office on the Hill.
And if you're looking for something to do right here in B/CS, here's an announcement from Nature's Haven:
"Nature's Haven is a wildlife rehabilitation center located off of 2818, and we are currently looking for some volunteers who would be willing to give a few hours here and there. Mostly, we would be asking that you help feed animals and clean cages in-between feedings. Our current residents consist of five squirrels, one flying squirrel, a hummingbird, a dove, a blue jay, and a couple of pigeons. Things have slowed down since baby bird season has passed, but we still need help. If you love animals, and have a few hours a week to volunteer, we would love to have you.
"If you don't necessarily want to commit to volunteering during school, we would appreciate it if you could help with the garage sale, which I believe is the 21st of October. The day before, we could use some volunteers to get all of the pricing done and have everything set up, and the next day we would just need people to watch the stuff.
"If you are interested, please contact me either by email, or call my home and leave a message if I am not there. My email address is lucy1899@yahoo.com, and my phone number is 260-4545.
"Thanks,
Nancy Satterfield."
