Volunteer to work in the the Marine Turtle Monitoring Project in the Galapagos
Islands

Introduction:
The Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation request volunteers
for the Marine Turtle Monitoring Project. We are looking for field-work oriented
volunteers to join the Marine Turtles Monitoring Program of the Galapagos national
Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation

Responsabilities:
Applicants will be responsible for collecting biological information in the field. Los
postulantes serán responsables de la colección de información biológica en el campo.
We are looking for persons dedicated to the conservation of native insular ecosystems,
who can work in applied research and in the management of protected areas in a
multicultural environment and in basic conditions.

Conditions:
Upon arrival in the Galapagos Islands, volunteers will attend a full week of theoretical
training in the facilities of the Charles Darwin Foundation in Puerto Ayora, and one
week of on-site training on the assigned study site.
There is no financial assistance provided with this project. During their stay in Puerto
Ayora, volunteers must pay all costs for transportation, housing and food. However,
once on the study sites, transportation, housing and food are covered by the project.

Volunteers' arrival and departure schedule:
For study sites Quinta Playa and Bahía Barahona on Isabela Island
- First group is CLOSED
Arrival in Puerto Ayora: November 30, 2009; Departure from the beach February 6, 2010
- Second group:
Arrival in Puerto Ayora: January 31, 2010; Departure from the beach: April 6, 2010
- Third group:
Arrival in Puerto Ayora: March 31, 2010; Departure from the beach: June 6, 2010

For sites Las Salinas on Baltra Island and Las Bachas on Santa Cruz Island
- First group (few spots left): Arrival in Puerto Ayora: January 3, 2010; Departure from the beach: March 9, 2010
- Second group:
Arrival in Puerto Ayora: March 1, 2010; Departure from the beach: May 9, 2010
- Third group:
Arrival in Puerto Ayora: May 3, 2010; Departure from the beach: June 10, 2010
Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills:
- Previous experience as a volunteer
- Students in biology or related field
- Previous field work experience in isolated places with basic living conditions and
possible adverse weather. The field sites are very isolated and far from inhabited
villages on Isabela, Santa Cruz and Baltra Islands. Volunteers will have to stay on
site for 2 consecutive months
- Knowledge of Spanish
- Non smokers (Smoking is strictly prohibited on the study sites)
- Know how to swim (the study beaches present a strong swell and the sites are
accessed with a dinghy)
- Medical certificate compatible with basic conditions of life (no respiratory
affections, no gastritis, ulcers, skin problems, allergies...)
- People without diet restrictions or preferences. For logistic reasons, a vegetarian or
any other special diet is not compatible with the basic conditions on study sites.
- Non-Ecuadorians should have their own health insurance
- Previous experience with marine turtles
