| Job Description: | Part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System's (NERRS) System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) is to develop a comprehensive database for current habitat characterizations on Reserve lands. The database serves as a platform for research and stewardship projects, and is critical to the development of robust, effective monitoring and management strategies. Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve has positions available for qualified individuals to assist with several aspects of SWMP and associated stewardship projects.
Assignments include: § Habitat Characterization: Salt Marsh Pools & Pannes § Habitat Mapping Accuracy Assessment § Invasive Plant Control Responsibilities & Time Commitments: § Assist Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and New Hampshire Department of Fish & Game to achieve 2010 stewardship project goals § Schedules are flexible § Approximately 20 hours per week § Attend regularly scheduled meetings § Participate in workshops and community outreach programs § Generate regular reports regarding progress § Locate pre-determined sites using GPS § Correctly characterize or assess existing habitat characterizations at sites § Record findings with strict attention to detail § Control invasive plant populations on Reserve properties § Adhere to New Hampshire control regulations and protocols for invasive plants § Identify aspects of standard protocols where modifications will accommodate the specific habitat features of Great Bay, subsequently improving monitoring methods |

| Qualifications: | A qualified applicant is currently an undergraduate or graduate student, or has earned a degree in Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Education, Biology or a related field. The applicant must possess excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently or with a group, outdoors, with minimal supervision for extended periods. Candidates must be prepared to work in challenging field conditions. Attention to detail and the ability to maintain an organized field notebook are required. Experience with GPS and GIS mapping are highly desirable, but training is available. | |
