| Title: | Northern Bobwhite Radio Telemetry |
| Agency: | University of Tennessee |
| Location: | Oldham Co, KY |
| Job Description: | Native grasslands (prairies & savannahs) are the most imperiled ecosystem in the eastern U.S. with >98% eliminated. That loss has resulted in sharp declines of associated native birds. The use of market-based incentives to deploy native grasses into livestock forage systems and emergence of cellulosic biofuels as an alternative energy crop has increased interest in native grasses among farmers. However, more information is needed on production guidelines and wildlife impacts. Therefore, we will document breeding grassland bird (Northern Bobwhite, Henslows Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Dickcissel, Eastern Meadowlark, and associated scrub-shrub species, such as Prairie Warbler) response to NBCI-based habitat conservation efforts in focal areas in KY and TN. The focus will be on managed NWSG including forage, seed production, and biofuels systems, all on working landscapes.
Job Duties: Trap and radio collar northern bobwhite, radio track collared birds, conduct point-count surveys, and vegetation sampling. Duties will require long hours, exposure to ticks, and self-motivation. Send cover letter, resume and references to awest20@utk.edu Start date: Early March - mid-late September Application deadline: Until suitable candidate is found |
| Qualifications: | Identify grassland birds by sight and sound, vegetation identification, GPS and a valid drivers license (required). Radio telemetry and trapping a plus. Able to work alone and with others, especially private landowners providing study sites. |
