Title: Technician I

Job Description: The Colorado Division of Wildlife is conducting a Gunnisons prairie dog, Cynomys gunnisoni, Occupancy Sampling project in SW Colorado.
Five Technician I positions are available from mid April 2010 through mid to late August 2010.

Primary job responsibilities (80%) will include; Navigation to randomly selected plots with Garmin and Trimble Juno GPS units, Collecting presence/absence information on Gunnisons prairie dogs, Kit fox, Ferruginous hawks, Wyoming ground squirrels, and Burrowing owls. This job involves extensive hiking in rough, uneven terrain. Plot locations require hiking at elevations from 5,000ft to 11,000ft. Operation of 4WD pickups on dirt and gravel roads and two-tracks is required to get to remote field sites. This field work will require use of Binoculars, rangefinders, compass, and topographic maps. Techs will also contact landowners and land managers regarding access to land via phone, and in person. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
Secondary job responsibilities (20%) will include; Trapping of Gunnisons prairie dogs with Tomahawk live traps to collect tissue samples for genetic sampling and collect fleas to test for plague. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary. Trapping will occur after occupancy work is completed.

Positions will be stationed in SW Colorado, however this work will require extensive travel with techs required to conduct field work in about a quarter of the state. Technicians will encounter steep terrain, muddy roads and other hazards. You will also see some amazing country and lots of wildlife. Southwest Colorado is a beautiful and unique part of the state and the country.

Some housing is provided, but camping will be required at certain locations.Work schedule is typically eight days on (each day is approximately 10 hours), six days off, but the schedule will remain flexible to accommodate weather.
Rate of pay is $13.50 per hour for a Technician I. Per diem is provided while in field.
Field vehicles are provided by CDOW.
Qualifications: Qualified applicants must be mature, responsible, safe, hard-working, independent, and comfortable working outdoors, alone and in pairs.

B.S. or working towards a degree, (Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology, Biology or related fields) field experience preferred although all qualified applicants will be considered.
*Must have valid drivers license

Top applicants will have the following skills:

- Excellent communication (oral and written). - Good physical condition, i.e. able to hike long distances with a pack
- GPS experience.
-Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
-Safely operate a 4-WD pickup.
- Awareness and respect for private land, Tribal land, public land, private landowners, sensitive ecosystems.
-Ability to work and get along with a variety of individuals
-Demonstrated ability to deal with remote field sites, outdoor work, and sometimes difficult field conditions. -Ability or willingness to learn to trap and handle live prairie dogs. Sense of humor.

Due to the remote and isolated nature of the fieldwork, applicants with the following field skills will also be preferred:

-4-WD pickup operation
- Ability to make independent decisions without daily supervision
- Experience working or interacting with landowners, ranchers, and hunters
- Basic First Aid, CPR training and certification
- Excellent physical condition
- Outdoor survival skills
- Experience with GPS, map and compass field work
-Experience Handling wildlife
